Dr Damodaran grew up in Sydney and completed his medical degree at the University of Newcastle. His neurosurgical training was undertaken across major tertiary hospitals in New South Wales, Western Australia and Victoria. Upon completion of his neurosurgical training, he undertook further subspecialty training in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious AO Spine Scholarship to complete an international fellowship in reconstructive spinal surgery in Denver, Colorado, USA.
Dr Damodaran has a particular interest in brain tumour surgery and endoscopic pituitary surgery. He has expertise in neuromonitoring and brain mapping techniques for brain tumours in eloquent or critical areas. These advanced techniques provide intraoperative assistance to the surgeon to minimise the risk of devastating neurological complications. Dr Damodaran is the chair of the multidisciplinary brain tumour meeting at Concord Hospital. He was awarded a Master of surgery for his brain tumour research thesis on the management of glioblastoma in the elderly.
Dr Damodaran has a strong research and teaching interest, with extensive publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is involved in NHMRC funded research trials and supervises research students. He is a reviewer for several international neurosurgical journals and has been invited to present at international conferences.
Dr Damodaran is a passionate advocate of Aboriginal health and global health, with a postgraduate qualification in International Health. He travels to Port Moresby General Hospital, Papua New Guinea, to provide pro bono neurosurgical services.
Dr Damodaran combines experience, scientific knowledge and current surgical techniques to provide the best advice and achieve optimal outcomes for his patients across Sydney and the Central Coast.
Dr Damodaran has considerable surgical experience in procedures involving the cranium (skull, tumours, masses) and the spinal column, including the neck (cervical spine) and back (thoracic and lumbar spine).
